National CPR and AED Awareness Week is coming up June 1 through 7, and it’s a good time for all of us to stop and think about whether we’d know what to do if someone’s heart suddenly stopped.
It’s one of those things you hope you never have to use; but the truth is, cardiac arrests happen more often than people realize, and it usually happens outside of a hospital. That means the first person on the scene is often a family member, coworker, or bystander. Someone like you.
To help more people feel ready to respond, I’m hosting a free live virtual session on Friday, June 6 from 12 to 1 p.m. CST. You can tune in during your lunch break. We’ll go over hands-only CPR, show you how an AED works, and talk about what to do in those first few minutes before help arrives.

Why CPR and AED Training Matters
Each year in the U.S., more than 350,000 people have a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital. The survival rate is low, but immediate CPR can make a real difference. When someone starts CPR right away, they help keep oxygen flowing to the brain and other organs until emergency responders take over.
AEDs, which are often found in schools, airports, and offices, can restart the heart if used quickly enough. They are designed to be simple to use and walk you through each step.
Knowing how to use both CPR and an AED can save a life. That’s what this awareness week is all about.
Simple Ways to Take Part
You don’t have to organize a big event or take a full class this week to make a difference. Here are a few ways to get involved:
Watch the live session on June 6 and invite others to join
Read up on hands-only CPR and share what you learn with friends or coworkers
Ask your school or workplace if there is an AED on-site and if staff know how to use it
Consider signing up for a CPR class in the future or encouraging your teen to learn
Small steps can lead to real change. The more people who know CPR, the more likely someone is there to help when it’s needed most.
