Every April, National Volunteer Week gives us a chance to recognize the incredible contributions of those who give their time, talent, and heart to help others. From April 21 to April 27, I want to shine a light on the volunteers who step up every day to make their communities stronger and safer.
As The CPR and Safety Lady, I have the privilege of training many of these volunteers. They are teachers, coaches, church members, parents, and everyday neighbors who take time out of their busy lives to learn how to save one. They may never expect to use those skills, but when they do, they become someone’s hero.
In Houston, tens of thousands of volunteers serve causes that matter, from feeding families and mentoring students to responding to emergencies and supporting public health efforts. Many of the people I train go on to become unofficial first responders in their homes, schools, churches, sports fields, and communities. They are often the first to act before emergency services arrive, and their calm, confident response can mean the difference between life and death.
That is why CPR and first aid training matters. It is not just for healthcare professionals. It is for anyone who wants to be prepared. I believe that when you give someone the tools and confidence to step in during a crisis, you empower them to be a force for good. Volunteers who choose to get trained are taking the first step toward becoming lifesavers.
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, I want to thank every person who has walked through my training doors with a desire to make a difference. Whether you learned how to help a choking child, use an AED, or perform hands-only CPR, you have made a commitment to be there for someone in their most vulnerable moment. That matters.
If you have ever thought about getting trained or hosting a class for your group, this is the perfect time. You never know when you will be called to act, and when you are, I want you to be ready.
Thank you to all the volunteers who serve quietly, humbly, and heroically. You inspire me every single day.
