As families gear up for pool days, beach trips, and summer vacations, it’s more important than ever to be prepared for emergencies. CPR and Safety Lady Gail Gould recently joined The Pebble podcast with host Tracy Armstrong to talk about CPR training, drowning prevention and what to do when a cardiac emergency happens.

Gail has trained thousands of parents, caregivers, teachers, and teens in CPR and first aid, and her mission is simple: give people the knowledge and confidence to act fast when every second counts.
What to Do in a Drowning or Cardiac Emergency
During the interview, Tracy asked a question many parents have likely wondered: If I see someone unconscious or pulled from the water, what can I do while waiting for 911?
“The first thing is always to call 911—or send someone to do it,” Gail explained. “Then, check if the person is breathing. If they’re not breathing normally or not breathing at all, begin CPR immediately.”
This advice is critical during summer, when drowning incidents increase, especially among young children. According to Gail, recognizing the signs of distress and responding quickly with chest compressions can save a life.
“Drowning is fast and silent,” she said. “You might not even hear a splash. That’s why constant supervision and CPR training for parents is so important.”
Why Every Parent Should Learn CPR
If you’ve ever hesitated to take a CPR class because you’re afraid of doing something wrong, you’re not alone. Gail’s goal is to change that mindset.
“I always tell people: Doing something is better than doing nothing,” she said. “You can’t hurt someone by performing CPR if they’re not breathing—you can only help.”
Gail encourages families, babysitters, and anyone who regularly watches children to attend a hands-on CPR training session or sign up for a virtual CPR class.
“You don’t need to be a medical professional to save a life,” she said. “You just need to be trained and ready.”
